Rda2Marc

Mapping RDA elements to MARC Authority records is relatively clean, compared to mapping to Bibliographic records; especially for PFC elements. Unfortunately, it does get a bit more complicated, dealing with Work and Expression element mapping, which has ended up split between Authority and Bibliographic records. Manifestation elements all map to Bibliographic records, but not neatly, especially in the relationships section. And Item mapping is still a mystery to me.

Here is a simple diagram that I hope illustrates how some of the Work and Expression elements must be incorporated with the Manifestation elements to make a combined MARC Bibliographic record:

Here is how our mapping should work in RIMMF; (A) = Authority record, (B) = Bibliographic record:

  1. You are in a Person, Family, Corporate Body, Work, or Expression record, and you click <F9>.
  2. For each element, RIMMF does the following:
    • If the Rda2Marc/A column contains:
      • data, then map to (A)
      • ‘no’, then do not may to (A)
      • blank, then map to (A) 999: meaning an orphan element
    • If the Rda2Marc/B column contains any data, ignore it
    • Save the record as a MARC Authority record, with the extension ‘.mrc.’
  3. You are in a Manifestation record, and click <F9>. For each element, RIMMF does the following:
    • If the Rda2Marc/B column contains:
      • data, then map to (B)
      • ‘no’, then do not map to (B)
      • blank, then map to (B) 999: meaning an orphan element
    • If the Rda2Marc/A column contains any data, ignore it
    • If an Expression Manifested link is present in the Manifestation record:
      • open the linked record
      • if the Rda2MARC/B column in the linked Expression record contains:
        • data, then map to Manifestation (B)
        • no’, then do not map to Manifestation (B)
        • blank, then map to Manifestation (B) 999: meaning an orphan element
      • if the Rda2MARC/A column contains any data, ignore it
      • If a Work Expressed link is present in the Expression record:
        • open the linked Work record
        • if the Rda2MARC/B column in the linked Work record contains:
          • data, then map to Manifestation (B)
          • no’, then do not map to Manifestation (B)
          • blank, then map to Manifestation (B) 999: meaning an orphan element
    • Save the combined Manifestation, Expression, and Work record as a MARC Bibliographic record, with the extension ‘.mrc.’
    • This means, of course, that you MUST create the Work and Expression data for your resource before you map your Manifestation data to MARC!

Here are the maps for each entity; I will update them as I learn more:

  • Person
  • Family
  • Corporate Body
  • Work
  • Expression
  • Manifestation
  • Item
